In England during the early 1800’s, a cross was favored between the determined, brave bull dog and the tenacious, agile terrier amongst those who had discovered the thrill of the canine show ring. In the 1860’s a gentleman by the name of James Hinks decided that he would base his more precise Bull-and-Terrier breeding experiments out of Birmingham, England. When asked what his inspiration was for carrying on this daunting task, his answer was, “Found a Bull Terrier a tattered old bum and made him a dog for a gentleman’s chum.” His toils produced a fine, muscled terrier with a stunning coat of pure white. He was called the White Cavalier, and his early popularity speaks volumes to the quality breed which we know call the bull terrier.
Mr. Hinks’ beloved white bulldog Madman was the founding stud for his unique and popular breed, and he was then bred to White English Terrier bitches until a proper balance and standard took root. The White English Terrier is now extinct, and the AKC has recognized a separate breed for those Cavaliers who took on a patched coat. All other standards are exactly the same for both the White Cavalier and the colored bull terrier, but dogs of color are not aloud in the white class and vise versa.
